You will begin with the political and scientific context of the Space Race \u2014 understanding how Cold War geopolitics between the United States and the Soviet Union accelerated rocket development from captured V-2 technology through the R-7 and Redstone programmes to the Saturn V, the most powerful rocket ever flown to operational success. The module covers every milestone of the early space age in detail: Sputnik’s orbital parameters and what its beeping signal proved; Yuri Gagarin’s Vostok 1 flight and its technical parameters; Alan Shepard’s suborbital Mercury flight; John Glenn’s orbital mission; and the progression through Gemini that developed the rendezvous and EVA skills essential for a lunar landing.
